Avner Hershlag, MD, Chief,
Professor, Obstetrics and Gynecology

Avner Hershlag, MD serves as Chief of the Center for Human Reproduction, where he has cared for patients for more than 20 years and established successful programs, including: donor egg, preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) and egg freezing/fertility preservation.   

Dr. Hershlag completed his undergraduate training in his native country, Israel, and graduated from the Hadassah Medical School in Jerusalem. While in medical school, Dr. Hershlag was elected Director of Medical Education of the International Federation of Medical Students Society.

Following three years of a General Surgery residency at Hadassah, Dr. Hershlag moved to the United States in 1984. Here, he completed his OB/GYN residency at the George Washington University Medical Center and a fellowship in reproductive endocrinology at Yale University School of Medicine.

Dr. Hershlag is a Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology at the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine at Hofstra University.  He also serves as an advocate for patient education and patient rights, serving on the Board of Directors for RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association. Dr. Hershlag is the author of over sixty original papers, 25 book chapters, and a novel entitled, Misconception. The recipient of several awards, he is actively engaged in multiple research projects. Dr. Hershlag was recently featured in a HealthDay News article on ectopic pregnancy and fertility. The study found that, despite the method of treatment, fertility rates are about equal for women who suffered an ectopic pregnancy. Read the full article here.

In an article published on Medline Plus, Dr. Hershlag discusses the link between hormones and blood clotting during pregnancy. Dr. Hershlag reassures us that even with IVF, the likelihood of getting a blood clot is still very rare.

Dr. Hershlag put patients at ease with his analysis of a new study that claims that the sons of women who use fertility drugs are shorter.  He feels that "there is not solid evidence" of such a link and adds that height is a very complex trait, and is influenced by genes, environment and diet more so than a fertility drug taken prior to conception.  Read the full article here.

Is there such thing as too much caffeine? Looking at your over packed schedule you may say "no" but a new study found that women who drink more than five cups of coffee per day were 50% less likely to become pregnant through IVF compared with women who did not drink coffee.  Dr. Hershlag recommends drinking coffee in moderation and advises those drinking 5 cups or more a day to evaluate why they are drinking that much coffee.  If stress or exhaustion is the culprit try finding something that relaxes you-- a good book, a long walk, reconnecting with your partner. See complete article.

Dr. Hershlag sets the record straight on a new study that shows an increase of birth defects in children conceived through IVF.  In interviews with WebMD and HealthDay News, Dr. Hershlag reassured patients that the risk of birth defects does not stem from the treatment but from parental factors such as smoking status, age and conditions during pregnancy. Be sure to speak with your REI on what you can do to help achieve a healthy pregnancy.
